According to the findings of the current study, the most appropriate method for the detection of the parasite is the ELISA that has a higher sensitivity and predictive value than acid-fast staining method and should be used in veterinary laboratories.
In the current investigation, C. parvum was identified as the only infectious agent in the region and could be the main cause of human infection. More studies are needed to find the source of infection for establishing the control measures.

Pharyngitis is one of the most common diagnoses for antibiotic prescriptions worldwide. Antibiotics should be prescribed for bacterial pharyngitis to reduce its complications. The aims of this study were to assess antibiotic prescriptions for pharyngitis cases, and their relationship with physicians' knowledge regarding its diagnosis and management.
A cross-sectional study was conducted. First, prescriptions for pharyngitis cases using the modified Centor criteria was evaluated at primary care centers in Saudi Arabia. Second, physicians' knowledge of the modified Centor score and the diagnosis and management of pharyngitis was assessed using a self-administered questionnaire.
Out of 104 pharyngitis cases, 79% (n = 82) were prescribed antibiotics, of which 28% were evidence-based prescriptions. First-line antibiotics were prescribed in 34% of patients, and second-line (broad-spectrum) antibiotics such as amoxicillin/clavulanate were prescribed in half of the patients. The main significant predictors of ayngitis, their practice failed to demonstrate that. Induction of the Saudi Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in the primary care centers, accessibility to diagnostic tools, and educational programs may help in reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions.
Infections caused by extensively-drug resistant (XDR) and pan-drug resistant (PDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae represent an emerging threat due to the high associated mortality. This study aimed to characterize two carbapenem resistant K. pneumoniae strains from the same patient, the first being PDR (referred to as IMP 1078b) and the second being XDR (referred to IMP 1078s) isolated from the same patient.
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done for the 2 K. pneumoniae isolates, followed by carbapenem/β-lactamase inhibitor combination assay, and fitness cost against cefepime and meropenem. Then, whole-genome sequence analysis was performed to decipher the molecular mechanisms behind the high level of resistance recorded in both isolates. Finally, qRT-PCR was done for β-lactam resistant genes.
This is the first report about a K. pneumoniae isolate harboring 47 antimicrobial resistance genes and having type IV pilli (Yersinia) and the fimbrial adherence determinant Stb (Salmonella) as virulence factors. Further analysis on both isolates are discussed within the article.
The co-existence of a high number of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) genes and virulence factor genes may lead to a life threatening invasive and untreatable infection.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) predicts the prognosis of COVID-19 disease.
This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on 87 confirmed COVID-19 patients. The patients were separated into two groups according to the admission in the ICU or in the ward. MIF was determined batchwise in plasma obtained as soon as the patients were admitted. Both groups were compared with respect to demographic characteristics, biochemical parameters and prediction of requirement to ICU admission.
Forty seven patients in ICU, and 40 patients in ward were included. With respect to MIF levels and biochemical biomarkers, there was a statistically significant difference between the ICU and ward patients (p< 0.024). In terms of ICU requirement, the cut-off value of MIF was detected as 4.705 (AUC0.633, 95%CI0.561-0.79, p= 0.037), D-dimer was 789 (AUC0.779, 95%CI 0.681-0.877, p= 0.000), troponin was 8.15 (AUC 0.820, 95%CI0.729-0.911, p= 0.000), ferritin was 375 (AUC 0.774, 95%CI0.671-0.876, p= 0.000), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was 359.5 (AUC0.843, 95%CI 0.753-0.933, p= 0.000). According to the logistic regression analysis; when MIF level > 4.705, the patient's requirement to ICU risk was increased to 8.33 (95%CI 1.73-44.26, p= 0.009) fold. Similarly, elevation of troponin, ferritin and, LDH was shown to predict disease prognosis (p< 0.05).
Our study showed that MIF may play a role in inflammatory responses to COVID-19 through induction of pulmonary inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that pharmacotherapeutic approaches targeting MIF may hold promise for the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia.

At the end of 2019, the COVID-19 broke out, and spread to Guizhou province in January of 2020.
To acquire the epidemiologic characteristics of COVID-19 in Guizhou province, we collected data from 169 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 related cases. We described the demographic characteristics of the cases and estimated the incubation period, serial interval and the effective reproduction number. We also presented two representative case studies in Guizhou province Case Study 1 was an example of the asymptomatic carrier; while Case Study 2 was an example of a large and complex infection chain that involved four different regions, spanning three provinces and eight families.
Two peaks in the incidence distribution associated with COVID-19 in Guizhou province were related to the 6.04 days (95% CI 5.00 - 7.10) of incubation period and 6.14±2.21 days of serial interval. We also discussed the effectiveness of the control measures based on the instantaneous effective reproduction number that was a constantly declining curve.1-Thioglycerol inhibitor
