Which one makes sense?

Ultimately, it depends on what workloads you're running and where you're running them. If you need various services in multiple clouds, multi-region capabilities, or scaling from one cloud to another, your decision will be made around the application stack.

In this blog post, you'll learn a bit about multi-cloud, hybrid-cloud, and Dell's APEX storage option.

What Is Multi-cloud

Multicloud can be thought of in two ways:

  1. Using multiple clouds for different services.
  2. Using multiple clouds for scaling and multi-region.

For example, let's say you're running a containerized environment. You may want to use Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) for particular application stacks and AWS Elastic Container Service (ECS) for separate stacks.

Another solution for multi-cloud would be to use particular service across multiple clouds. An example of this is Azure Active Directory. Active Directory has been the de facto standard for authentication and authorization for years. Although Azure Active Directory is in Azure, you could use it for something like managing users and RBAC for AWS EKS or GCP GKE.

What About Hybrid Cloud

When talking about the hybrid model, it typically consists of a mix of public cloud and on-prem resources. It could be a private cloud, standard VMs', bare metal, storage devices, etc...

Hybrid cloud can also be considered "multi-cloud".

What About Storage?

Regardless of if you go the multi-cloud, hybrid-cloud, or no cloud at all, you need storage.

If you're running a Kubernetes cluster, you need volumes. If you're running VMs, you need to dedicate virtual HD's. If you're running bare metal, you need hard drives. In any instance, storage matters.

If you're deciding which storage to choose from, Dell has APEX storage. Based on numbers that were shared with Delegates at Cloud Field Day, APEX Storage is faster and more reliable than AWS EBS and Azure Storage.

Some key features are:

  1. Multi-cloud capabilities.
  2. Cheaper and faster than AWS EBS (the top tier).
  3. Available for various Kubernetes environments from EKS to Azure Stack HCI.
  4. Database disk capabilities.

From a cost perspective, you can save 82% in Azure and 87% in AWS from a storage perspective.

Why Would You Switch Storage

If you're thinking about moving from something like Azure Storage or AWS EBS to Dell APEX, it's not the best scenario for startups or mid-sized companies unless you have a particular use case. Ultimately, a storage solution like Dell APEX is for a larger enterprise.
