Part04 - Dr Sheldon on governing AI systems

Intro:

AI governance refers to the policies, processes, and frameworks that are put in place to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) systems are developed, used, and regulated in a responsible and ethical manner.

Something like the relationship / room mate agreement

Below are some of the key consideration that needs to be part of AI governance

Transparency
Transparency in artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the degree to which the decision-making process of an AI system is open, understandable, and explainable to human users. It is an important consideration when it comes to the development and deployment of AI, as it helps to build trust and confidence in the system, and can also help to identify and address any biases or errors that may be present in the data or algorithms used by the system. One approach is to build models which are simpler with fewer parameters, or using techniques such as feature selection and dimensionality reduction to identify the most important features in the data. Another approach to improving transparency in AI is through the use of explainable AI (XAI) techniques, which aim to provide human-readable explanations for the decisions made by an AI system. Overall, transparency in AI is an important consideration for ensuring that the decision-making processes of AI systems are fair, accountable, and trustworthy.

In Season 2, Sheldon and Raj can not agree on what to watch. Raj suggests rock, paper, scissors. Sheldon says there is too much chance of a tie, and suggests Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock and extension. The detailing of how the game works is a parallel I thought explained transparency

Inclusion
Ensuring that the perspectives and needs of all stakeholders are considered in the development and deployment of AI systems, and that the benefits of AI are shared equitably.

  • Diversity: Ensuring that the data used to train AI systems is diverse and representative of the populations that the systems will be used with. This can help to reduce biases and improve the accuracy of the AI system.

  • Accessibility: Ensuring that AI systems are accessible and usable by people with different abilities and needs. This can involve designing systems with accessibility features, such as text-to-speech or visual aids, to make them more usable by people with disabilities.

  • Social and economic impacts: Evaluating the potential social and economic impacts of AI systems, and taking steps to mitigate any negative impacts and ensure that the benefits of AI are shared equitably

Mid through the series Sheldon looks for advice on what to do about his assistant with a work situation. He tries to data mask the situation so that he gets a collective view from different personas

Ethical considerations
Ensuring that AI systems are designed and used in ways that are consistent with ethical principles and values, such as fairness, non-discrimination, and respect for privacy.

In season 10, Sheldon decides to try the M.I.T. developed emotion detector with the intention he wants to use it to determine the fears of his enemies so he can destroy them. Sheldon understands that though the emotion detector helped him detect emotion his action of showing up in a conversation between Penny and Leonard resulted in the argument.

Safety and Security
Ensuring that AI systems are designed and used in ways that minimize risks to safety and security, and that appropriate measures are in place to mitigate any negative impacts that may arise.

Sheldon's readiness to have a process / system in place if things goes wrong is evident throughout the series but the example for this would be his illuminate flooring and emergency survival pack

AI governance requires a holistic approach that takes into account a wide range of social, ethical, and technical considerations, and involves the active participation and engagement of a diverse set of stakeholders.
