10 Tips for junior developers

Tips that I would give to someone just starting out as a software developer in the tech industry:

  1. Don't be intimidated by the already existing codebase. Yes, it is new and unknown and you will be scared by looking at it but know that everyone once was.
  2. Don't ask for help unless absolutely necessary, first try to solve the problem yourself.
  3. Ask for help if you have been stuck for a long time but first ask for help to your peers. If your peers are not able to find a solution too, then ask for help to your seniors but always tell them what you already did to try and solve the problem.
  4. Don't be scared of new tech stacks, it is all the same thing, same basics apply.
  5. Don't indulge in gossip, don't talk behind people's backs.
  6. Colleagues are colleagues, they are not friends, so don't overshare.
  7. Be ready to face office politics, favoritism, this happens in most places.
  8. Collaborate with other teams effectively to produce the best results.
  9. Overdeliver if you want to have a good reputation.
  10. Be confident in meetings and calls, confidence means you've done good work.
